Topic: "Tools for the Character-Challenged" PLUS "How to Avoid Shooting Yourself in the Foot in Publishing"
In the morning session, New York Times bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries will present her popular "Tools for the Character-Challenged" seminar. Are you a plot-driven writer who focuses on what happens in the story to the detriment of character motivation? Does the plot come to you in a flash while you find yourself having to shoe-horn the characters into it to make it fit? Are you a character driven author who has trouble figuring out how to show the reader (rather than tell the reader) about your characters? Then this talk is designed for you. Sabrina, a self-proclaimed plot-driven author, teaches other plot-driven authors how to draw more complex characters and teaches both plot-driven and character-driven writers how to illustrate those characters in their fiction. Included is a useful chart containing questions that elicit the characters' true natures in relation to plot, and exercises to help writers think more deeply about character.
In the afternoon session, Sabrina and agent Pamela Ahearn of The Ahearn Agency (who represents several bestselling authors, including Sabrina) will discuss "How to Avoid Shooting Yourself in the Foot in Publishing--Some Practical Business Advice from a Bestselling Author and Her Agent." They'll cover several areas of publishing, including how to choose projects, how to know when to walk away from a project, how to approach an agent, how to interact with your editor and agent, and what you can expect from the publishing process. There will be lots of information in handouts.
